Arthroscopy (camera operation) refers to a procedure during which Dr Gupta is able to view multiple structures, including the surface of your joints. This procedure is conducted through very small incisions. The procedure is performed for a number of reasons, including to diagnose and treat joint conditions, conduct surgical procedures and monitor certain diseases. Dr Gupta uses arthroscopic techniques to treat conditions of the knees and shoulders, as well as injuries.
When it is necessary to undergo shoulder arthroscopy, Dr Gupta will insert a surgical instrument known as an arthroscope into your shoulder joint. The arthroscope comprises a camera and a light, and works by sending images of your joint and other structures to a screen, which Dr Gupta is able to see as he works with tiny surgical tools. Both the arthroscope and the surgical tools are inserted through small incisions over the joint, because the procedure is minimally-invasive, recovery time is generally much quicker than traditional open surgery. There is also less scarring, and less risk of infection.
Dr Gupta may recommend shoulder arthroscopy to treat conditions such as:
During knee arthroscopy, Dr Gupta will insert an arthroscope into your knee joint. Knee arthroscopy may be recommended for the treatment of conditions such as:
Before undergoing arthroscopy, Dr Gupta will perform a physical examination. He will also ensure that x-rays are done. An MRI may be requested if it is deemed appropriate. These imaging tests will help to confirm the diagnosis and make sure that surgery is the best treatment for your circumstances.
After the procedure, Dr Gupta will advise you of the best recovery plan, depending on your needs.
Dr Gupta performs orthopaedic arthroscopy to diagnose and resolve joint issues. Dr Gupta inserts a tube-like device with a camera and light attached (arthroscope) through one of the small incisions made over the joint to diagnose and treat joint pain or instability.
Pain is common with any procedure. However, the pain should subside in a matter of weeks. In addition, Dr Gupta will prescribe medication to help ease your symptoms.
It can take six weeks to recover from surgery, sometimes longer, depending on whether Dr Gupta repaired the tissue.
Dr Harish Gupta completed his degree in orthopaedics at the University of Witwatersrand. He subsequently completed his fellowship before working as a consultant at the same establishment and its group of hospitals.
