Orthopaedics is a specialised field that focuses on the diagnosis and surgical management of musculoskeletal conditions. This field involves treating conditions affecting the joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, bones, surrounding blood vessels and nerves.
Fortunately, an orthopaedic surgeon specialises in sports medicine and performs general orthopaedic surgery and other specific procedures. There exist Fellowships in sports orthopaedics and arthroscopy.
Dr Gupta recommends conservative treatments (rest, ice, compression and elevation) before considering surgery. In some cases, physical therapy and injections reduce pain and restore a specific part of the body's function.
Arthroscopy is a widely performed procedure to see inside the joint extensively without creating a large, unsightly incision. Arthroscopy can even be used to repair joint damage. In some cases, multiple procedures can be performed simultaneously. For example, Dr Gupta can remove or fix broken pieces of bone, repair torn cartilage and treat inflammation in the joint.
Orthopaedic injections are often used to treat joint pain, stiffness in the joint and joint inflammation.
