Before undergoing hip replacement surgery, Dr Gupta will perform a physical examination. He will also ensure that x-rays are done. These imaging tests will help to confirm the diagnosis and make sure that surgery is the best treatment option for your needs. Other tests may be ordered as required.
Conditions that may cause considerable pain in the hips include osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis. The hip replacement procedure may also be recommended if you are suffering from severe hip pain caused by an injury, such as a fracture.
During hip replacement surgery, Dr Gupta will carefully replace any damaged cartilage and/or bone in the hip with artificial materials, such as metal, ceramic, and plastic.
During the procedure, you will be given a general and/or spinal anaesthetic before Dr Gupta starts operating on your hip.
The hip joint will be exposed by moving the muscles of the hip joint out of the way. Dr Gupta will remove any damaged cartilage from the surface of the hip bone. When the bone surface has been adequately prepared, an artificial socket is placed. The ball part of the hip joint is then removed from the body, and an artificial component is attached to the thigh bone. Dr Gupta may insert a special drain before repositioning the muscles and closing the incision.
After surgery, you will need to stay in the hospital for a few days while you recover. Dr Gupta will advise you of the best recovery plan, which may include physiotherapy and certain lifestyle changes which will have been discussed with you before surgery. Dr Gupta typically recommends that his patients transfer to a rehabilitation centre for five to seven days after surgery. Although you should not feel too much pain after the procedure, Dr Gupta may prescribe some pain medication to manage any discomfort after surgery. Walking aids will be required after hip replacement.
Dr Gupta will provide specific post-operative instructions to follow. For example, he will ask that you avoid crossing your legs for at least 6-8 weeks. Furthermore, it would be best if you didn't raise your knee above the hip area. In addition, try not to lean forward when you are sitting. Live on a single level to avoid stair climbing. Avoid sitting in low chairs.
Hip replacement surgery is required when you develop the following symptoms:
pain and instability. The scan or X-ray results can tell whether you require hip replacement surgery.
